My move to South Australia

At the start of 2011 I moved to South Australia. We live in a rental house in Victor Harbor. It took us 12 hours to get from my old house to my new one (I lived in Victoria). My dad drove here in a truck that he had hired to carry all our stuff from our old house. My mum was driving our old BMW with me, my sister our cat and our chicken which was in a basket. Not long after we moved here we bought two tiny chickens. We got them because we came over with one then we got one from our cousins. The dog from next door killed the one we got off our cousins so our other chicken was lonely. We got our little chickens from the "Wet 'n' Wild" pet shop. I had my birthday a few weeks ago and it was great! I got heaps of money and presents.

Olive Baboons

Olive Baboons don't have colourful faces like most people think, but the do have red bottoms. Mandrills are the ones that have colourful faces. Mother baboons carry their babies on their backs. Male baboons fight. The baboons can be injured or the fight can be fatal. Baboons live in big groups.

Black-rock skink

Black-rock skinks can grow to about 20cm long. I kept one for a couple of weeks as a pet. He only bit be twice and it hurt! My black-rock skinks name was Clawrie. he loved the flowers in my back garden. You can find them near rocks or wood but they're very rare. They have a black body but I have forgotten what the colour of their belly is.

parrot crossbill

Parrot crossbills can get to about 16-18 cm. The juveniles bill is less pronounced and hardly separable from other juvenile crossbills. Parrot crossbills moult between June and November. It's voice tends to be lower, slower and slightly better enunciated than the crossbill. There voice is a 'quop, quop' sound. They are found in pine and spruce forests, and in Britain also in the remains of the ancient caledonian forest of the Scottish highlands. Parrot crossbills feed on seeds of conifer trees, especially Scots pine, and also spruce and larch. Some invertebrates are also eaten when nesting.

ECHIDNA

Echidnas are only found in Australia. Just like the platypus the echidna is called a monatreme witch means they are mammals that lay eggs. Recently my mum's cousin gave me an echidna spike that he found 10 years ago.

chickens

Chickens are one of the most common birds in the world. In 2003 They had a population of 24 billion chickens!

MICE

Mice are considered pests just like rats. Lucky I have a cat because we had a mouse problem and the cat ate the mouse. The mouse we had chewed on my mums favourite skirt!

sharks

A shark can sense even a small amount of blood in water one kilometre /half a mile away. Little is known about the megamouth shark as it was first discovered by scientists in 1976. Only three photographs of it in it's natural habitat exist in the entire world. Some of the items found inside sharks' include a horse's head, a porcupine, parts of bicycles and cars, a sheep, a chicken coop-and even a suit of armour with the remains of a french solder inside!

Dragons are mythical creatures. In some pictures of dragons they have two heads but most have one head. Sometimes I draw pictures of dragons because I love drawing things that I can make up the look of.

Perentie lizards

Perentie lizards are the biggest lizards in Australia. They are very fast runners. Perenties eat scorpions and sometimes smaller lizards.

Alligators

Alligators aren't as aggressive as crocodiles. Alligators make a grunting noise. Just like crocodiles alligators build up stress. You can feel the stress build up. Thats why you need to move as fast as possible when your catching one.

DEATH ADDERS

Death adder's don't frighten easily, and instead of slipping away as a human approaches, it lies motionless and camouflaged. this makes it easy to tread on, wich is how most people get bitten. It is unlikely to strike unless touched, but has a very fast strike and tends to hang on. It's fangs are quite long, 6 to 8 millimetres, and it is more mobile than most other venomous snakes. Before antivenom,fifty per cent of bites were fatal. This snake is mostly active at night. It uses it's tail like a worm to lure it's prey. It spends most of it's time half-buried, waiting to ambush prey. The Northern Death Adder and the Desert Death Adder are both smaller in size than the Common Death Adder. The Desert Death Adder also has a blackish tail tip and the lighter crossbands may have their hind edges marked by black-tipped scales.

There are a few different types of crocodiles like the Salt-water crocodile or Nile crocodile. Fresh-water crocodiles are very harmless. My favourite crocodile is the biggest the salt-water crocodile.

MACAWS

Macaws are my favourite birds. There is all different types of macaws. Macaws are just like big parrots.

Therazinosaurus

Therazinosaurus had ten foot long arms with giant claws. It used it's claws to push it's food into it's mouth.

Grizzly Bears

Grizzly Bears also known as Brown Bears eat salmon and sometimes crabs. If the males get close to the to the cubs they will try and kill them. The males are very aggressive.

Orcas (Killer Whale)

Orcas eat seals and sea lions. They can rush up to a seal or a sea lion so fast that the seal can't get away.

Huntsman's

Huntsman spiders aren't very aggressive. They are only aggressive if they are frightened. I have carried a Huntsman before on my arm. (I have changed the Huntsman photos, thanks Pop for these great pictures!)

Leather-Back Turtle

Leather-Back Turtles are the biggest turtle (There the ones that swim). They lay there eggs on land even though they live in the sea.

Snapping turtles have a tongue that looks like a worm to attract fish into it's mouth. They have giant strong beaks. Snapping turtles are huge.

Platypuses have a rubbery bill for feeding on larvae. Platypuses are one of the 2 mammals that lay eggs. They are called monetremes. Male platypuses have poison in there back feet.

Tarbosaurus

Tarbosaurus was the ancestor of T-Rex. Tarbosaurus had teeth the size of bananas! There teeth were as sharp as steak knifes.

zebras

All zebras have different stripe pattens. The males are called stallions, the baby's are called foals and the females are called mares just like horses. Zebras make HE,HE noises.

THYLACINE (Tasmanian tiger)

As everyone knows Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) are extinct. But not many people know how the became extinct. There were lots of thylacine before the white people came. When the white people came they killed a lot of them. The last Thylacine died in captivity.

Tasmanian Devils

Tasmanian Devils have a very strong jaw pressure. They have big teeth for tearing meat. I've only seen them on TV and at Zoos. I've never seen one in the wild. Tasmanian Devils are getting tumours. They need our help!

bald eagles

Bald Eagles have a white tail and head. They have especially sharp talons for catching it's prey. Bald Eagles aren't as big as a Wedge-Tailed Eagle but they are really big.

palm cockatoos

Palm Cockatoos are endangered. They have huge beaks and a huge big crest. They are all black except there face. Palm Cockatoos have a bright red face.

wedge tailed eagles

Wedge tailed eagles are my favourite eagles. They are the biggest eagles in Australia and are one of the biggest eagles in the world! Sometimes they eat lizards,snakes and even emu eggs. They are a brownish black colour.

KOMODO DRAGONS

Komodo dragons have saliva that can kill it's prey! They are very dangerous.they are very fast and could kill a human easily.

Pterosaurs

Some pterosaurs were small like Tapijara and some were huge like Quetzalcoatlus. Ornithocheirus was the biggest pterosaur that ever lived. It's wingspan was over 15 metres long!

hippopotamuses

There are 2 types of Hippopotamuses. The larger Hippo everyone knows about but there is another type called the Pygmy Hippopotamus. They are much smaller. Hippo's have been known to kill more people than any other animal in Africa!

Red bellied black snakes

Red bellied black snakes don't have a red belly! They have a white belly. The red is on the sides of the snake. I have seen quite a lot of them. Luckily I've been in the car when I have seen them.

Centipedes and millipedes

At my cousins house there are millions of millipedes. Sometimes

when you look under rocks you can find 1 or 2 centipedes.

Centipedes have a poisonous bite. Millipedes have a weird smell.

Dragon Flies

Dragon flies are my favourite insects. They can be yellow,green,blue and sometimes red! Dragon flies lived before the dinosaurs. Back then dragon flies were the size of eagles! Along with millions of other insects. That time was called the carboniferous.

Bees and wasps

I have been stung by a bee before but luckily not a wasp. Common paper wasps are a pretty big wasp. I think they are about 2 inches long! But I don't know. When I got stung it hurt a lot. I really like honey. Especially honey on toast.

I have always been interested in flies. Flies can come in all different shapes and sizes. They come from small house flies to big robber flies. The most interesting fly to me is the robber fly because I don't see them very much. I have recently seen a fly that I have never seen before. It has bright orange eyes, grey wings and a black body. If you know what it is please tell me.
